My class consists of a group of 25 fifth grade students who are extremely academically/intellectually gifted. We have come to a point in our study of Algebra One that we need graphing calculators for them to complete their understanding of linear and quadratic functions. The graphing calculator is not simply a tool to make calculations faster, it is essential to grasping the concepts of algebra and using those concepts to become more mathematically literate. The students need these, but it is uncommon for fifth graders to be studying algebra at this level, therefore the school system is unlikely to recognize this need even if the system had the funds to support this. Unfortunately, these students are often seen as having all they need simply because they have such voracious intellects. It is my hope that you will share with me the philosophy that all children should have what they need to be successful. This is the concept of fairness that we ask you to embrace on behalf of these students. By going on line to Ebay I have been able to obtain several TI-83 calculators at my own expense. We need a little more help to get to our goal of having one calculator for each pair of students by the Fall of 2005. Thank you for your consideration in this endeavor.
