I will be teaching third grade for the first time. I am very excited and thrilled about this. My school has a program for math that is called Everyday Math. I have become very familiar with this program and I believe that my 25 students will benefit greatly from the program. We will begin Everyday Math at the end of August. My only concern is that the program consists of students using calculators for solving problems. I unfortunately do not have calculators to begin the program on the first day of school. This program consists of the students using the calculators throughout the year. The students will use the calculators to solve problems, for hands-on activities, and to play math games which will greatly increase their math skills. My school has purchased other materials needed for the program; unfortunately the calculators were not purchased for third grade. This summer I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop for Everyday Math which showed teachers how to use the program to benefit student learning. The calculators were used throughout the entire workshop demonstrating how important the calculators are for incorporating math skills and knowledge to the students.
