Many of my students come from homes where parents work multiple jobs just to be able to provide basic needs. Many families have faced a multitude of trials and tribulations that our children should not have to think about at such a young age. The heart that these kids show on a daily basis makes me realize that it doesn't matter where anybody comes from, but it matters where they go from there.
The majority of the students at my school are free and reduced lunch.
Many of my students come from broken homes and poverty. They have been exposed to many things that children should not have to witness. It is heartbreaking to know what some of them have been through, yet they come to school every day to try to learn. They look to me for comfort, nurturing and learning. Many of them live in poverty where books are not on the menu because they are trying to find money for their next meal.
My Project
There is nothing better than the excitement of a child with a book! These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy and the books are on their reading level. These new books will allow my students to choose books not only by level but also by their interest so that it fosters a love for reading. The books in my classroom are loved and cared for. The students are thankful for the opportunity to read various books on their level. Students will be able to choose books that they enjoy to read on their own their own.
The best way to build better readers is to read more.
These books will allow my students easier access to books on their independent level. My students already show a love for reading and this project will give them many opportunities to read more.
