Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My second graders are working hard to be good readers. They have learned so much from the fictional books they love. But they also need nonfiction books to read.

As they grow, more and more of what they read will be nonfiction.

In order to be successful they need to read nonfiction and learn from it as well. Our textbooks have nonfiction stories in them, but I believe that my students will be more motivated and interested by real books.

My Project

I have selected nonfiction books that my class will love. Gail Gibbons is one of their favorite authors because she uses the whole page to teach children, using both text and diagrams to explain concepts. I have also selected books from the Rookie Reader series to help my struggling readers.

I believe that my students deserve to read from high quality books.

I believe that giving my students access to high quality books will allow them to achieve and motivate them to keep reading.
