We are the Scholar Class. Together we work towards bettering our lives, education, and personal self worth. We are a public choice school in Concord, CA. Parents and the community have committed to supporting their child's education by volunteering their time in and outside of the school and making education a priority. There is no question that our students are privileged to have such amazing support and perhaps one of the reasons we are one of the top 20% high performing public schools in California. However, we rely on time and energy, not money.
Our wait lists are getting longer, and our school is becoming more and more diverse, which just widens the students' needs and abilities.
They speak more than twenty-seven languages including English, Spanish, Bulgarian, Russian, Japanese, Tagalog, and Arabic. Along with multicultural and economic diversity, our school is seeing a large increase of students being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, Autism, and other learning disabilities. Therefore, the need to look outside the box and find ways to meet the needs and abilities of our students is more important today than ever.
My Project
Many factors can affect whether or not a student can hear. In our classroom, we have chatters, wobble stools, air conditioners, and just six and seven year olds being first graders (a.k.a loud). As their teacher I want my students to be heard. I want them to speak in clear, coherent sentences and command the classroom "stage." Having a Qball, a throwable mic, will not only help students to hear each other, it will act as a talking stick (visual indicating who has the floor), and also help my students with hand-eye coordination (catching and throwing). The Qball is a fun and interactive way to promote classroom discussion and participation, and will encourage listening and speaking.
