My students need picture frames.
Our biggest challenge is that the students' schedule only affords them art class once a week. Art Club gives them more time to explore & experience art. We have a large group (30 students) who WANT to be here after-school. They are excited to create pieces to give back to their learning community.
We are made up of a community of individuals who are striving to improve our school atmosphere&to maintain a 'safe' school environment.
Over the past few years, our students have grown up into kind young adults, & have realized the importance of being kind & treating one another with respect. With that said, our educators have worked really hard to rebuild our community,& our students are eager to be a part of that. The Art Club has partnered up with our school's principal & have developed a project that gives our students the creative freedom to design unique artwork. This project is really important to the students because they are creating permanent pieces that will help improve the school's atmosphere. The members of the art club take immense pride in contributing to the space they spend most of their time. Furthermore, our members are highly motivated to create art. They WANT to be here, and spend extra time afterschool to create art. They only have art once a week, so it says a lot
Our principal approached me & asked if the Art Club students could design pieces of artwork that could be hung up in the school. I thought it would be fun to give them a theme & set them free to create. Their theme is "Through the Window". The frames I am requesting will act as the window & the students will create their scenes on large pieces of paper (24" x 36"). Once the students create their scenes, the plexi in the frames will be painted to act as a window frame. Then the whole piece will be assembled&hung up in the school. There will be 30 different windows installed in the school. Each student has a different design & will be using different materials. I will work closely with each of them to go over specific techniques & methods. In the end they will walk away with refined skills specific to their selected materials. They will also walk away with a new art experience, and have spent more time making art, which is especially important when they only meet once a week.
Ultimately, I am excited that the members will be producing art for their community.
The idea and feeling behind giving back is so important to developing as a person. Art can bring on intense feelings, and our goal is to bring on joy and happiness. The students will feel pride in their work, and pride in knowing that their work will make their peers, future students and adults happy. Giving back is a kind act, and our students are kind.
