Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever been at a loss for inspiration, especially when writing? Then suddenly you see a picture or an object and the thoughts come pouring out! Help my students see their lives and the world around them as inspiration to encourage the love of writing.
I currently teach third grades in a socioeconomically disadvantaged community where the large majority of the community is Spanish speaking.
But they have hearts of gold and dreams for the future which inspires them to always work hard and try their best.
My Project
My plan is to allow students to use the cameras, both in school and on a loaner basis, to capture their lives and things they enjoy. The photos will then be the starting point for writing, both expository and fiction. The pictures can both be uploaded to a computer and printed to be added to their published pieces. With four cameras, all students would have access to at least one camera, once a week. Students will learn not only how to see through their own "lenses" at their lives but have a personal reason to write. I can see the students also working in cooperative groups to complete a project, using the camera as an additional resource to gather information in the world they live.
Think of the joy you get at taking a photo of your loved ones or a beautiful landscape.
Now imagine the joy my students will have at the same opportunity and the excitement that will build in them as they write, telling everything about that moment. Who knows if one of my students will be the next Maya Angelou or Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, because they loved writing. One or more may even be inspired to be photographers, and become the next Ansel Adam's of the world.
