Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You get a once in a lifetime chance to visit China! A picture tells a thousand words but you don't own a camera! Twenty-five underprivileged students will visit the rich historic and cultural sites of China and we want them to be able to capture the images and translate them into their own stories.
My inner city students live in a depressed, crime, drug, and gang infested community.
They are primarily African American and Hispanic. They are working hard to make this dream trip a reality. Car washes, movie nights, poetry afternoons, bake sales, clean up projects, and book sales are some of the many activities they are pursuing to raise money for our ten day educational tour to China. This is an opportunity not ordinarily availed to students in our community. These charter school students represent our very best from grades 8-12. They have signed contracts and written essays about why they want to go and why they deserve to go to China. And they want to capture every moment for a lifetime of memories. Students will create a team journal and DVD. Cameras are a luxury we simply cannot afford. If more students could share what will be part of our "team" cameras, more roving reporters can become a reality. In fact, what if every student could have a camera of their own!
My Project
Thank you Donorschoose! We have have been fortunate to have already been supported with 18 cameras and await delivery. The students are now hoping each of them can have their own camera. With your help, maybe we can put a camera in every participating student's hands! If not, at the end of the trip they will be able to vote on who gets to keep the cameras (based on leadership, flexibility, and simply doing everything they can to make this trip the best for everyone). No suburban kid embarks on a journey like this camera-less. My students are working so hard to pay for the trip. With extra cameras and memory cards, we will create a team of enthusiastic photojournalists! Each student deserves a camera of his/her own, and we're almost there! During our ten day trip, they will take pictures of historic sites and unique Chinese culture. The images will provide the stimulus for the students to write their stories that will last a lifetime. Donors-- thank you for all you do!
Imagine the excitement of the students as they get their shot at taking photographs of this far away place, using a camera that could be their own.
When they're at the Great Wall, walking through the market in Xian, or mesmerized by the seven-foot tall terracotta soldiers, every student will want a camera in hand. With your donation, we will be closer to making this part of the dream a reality. They will take the photos, and then they will be able to write and read all about it-- forever.
