Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Using technology to encourage students to learn has changed the wave of the future. I am a special education teacher, teaching in a high-need community. I am also a Teaching Fellow, Cohort 12, and our goal is to reach out to students who need help the most and try to close the achievement gap. I teach in a 5th grade inclusion classroom. My students who have disabilities have role models within their class to see how to be the best they can. I am a teacher who is looking to make a change. I am looking to make that change through technology.

Teaching in a high-need community, our school is very low in supplies. Our recent overhead projector burned out and now my students are not able to visually see how to, for example, fill in a graphic organizer. Now, my students are unable to visually see concepts and are now facing an obstacle. Since I teach in a special education setting, most of my students are visual learners and need more resources to understand. This is a problem that my students are facing and we are trying our best to overcome this obstacle.

Being in the 21st century, I want to introduce my school to a new and improved technology equipment. Teaching students technology at a younger age expands their minds. I want to upgrade my broken overhead to a brand new ELMO multimedia projector. This technology will benefit my students in so many ways. The ELMO can project any worksheet on the board and the best part is that the worksheet does not need to be transparent! I can project a homework worksheet and go over the problems with the class and I can also project a writing sample of a student's and correct grammar/punctuation with the whole class. Another huge advantage the ELMO has over an overhead is that I can simply point to a passage from a text we are reading and have all my students see it, even though it is not transparent! I can project any worksheet and all my students can see it and learn from it.

Your help will make a enormous difference for my students. You will also be helping in closing the achievement gap, making our students all be on the same page. Having an ELMO in my classroom will allow my students to grow as learners and be able to see things through a different light. You can make this possible for my students by being apart of a change. This is very important for my students because it will allow for more visualization to occur and it will help my students tremendously. My students can succeed and grow as educators.
