Through the Eyes of Children -- A Rainforest Scrapbooking Experience
My students need nonfiction books about the Rainforest to complete research on their topic. They will need a digital camera to take pictures of their work to complete a scrapbook lay out on the Rainforest.
I am a 5th grade Language Arts and Science teacher in a low economic rural elementary school. We have very limited resources to purchase materials for the classroom. We try to incorporate technology in our classrooms and subject areas as much as possible.
The students have demonstrated an interest in scrapbooking after seeing the classroom teacher's scrapbook of a trip to Cuba. They have an interest in taking pictures and developing a scrapbook. I would like to see the students incorporate science activities on the rain forest and integrate Language Arts. The students will write reports on a plant or animal from the rain forest habitat and create a mural in our hallway, build dioramas, do graphing on the computer, and write poetry. Digital pictures will be included in the scrapbook along with their reports, graphs, and poetry. This project will stimulate creativity, include independent work and cooperative learning in my students.
Using the books on the rain forest the students will have available an opportunity to do research within our classroom. They will write a formal research using the writing process and publish their work using the computers within our schools. This will be part of the wall mural that the students will create. The students will also draw a diagram of their topic. A digital picture will be taken of the student and their life size drawing to be used on their scrapbook page. The student will have an independent project of a rain forest diorama to be completed at home using endless resources. They will also take a digital picture of their diorama to be included in the scrap book. We will discuss and record students favorite plant and animal and the students will create graphs using Excel program on the computer to be included in their scrapbook page. In Language Arts class we will write Haiku poems that will be hand written for the scrapbook page. The students will be taught about layout pages and embellishments for their scrapbook page.
Your support in this project will ensure that my students will have the books to research their topics. The funding will also make it possible that the students will have the opportunity to use a digital camera and develop a skill in scrapbooking, which could promote a life long hobby.
