My scholars love school and are eager to learn! They can be seen showing their leadership skills by reading to a classmate, assisting a younger scholar with classwork or organizing materials for a project. When visitors enter my classroom, they always compliment my scholars on how engaged they are in discussions about books and conversations about using innovative strategies in math.
All of my scholars come from low-income homes and receive free lunch.
Here is the cultural make-up of the scholars in my school: 87% are Latino (Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Ecuador), 9% are African or African-American; and 2% are Asian. Twenty-seven percent of our scholars are English language learners and 23% have disabilities. More than half of our students are part of after-school programs that allow them to be active, express themselves through music and dance, or develop their skills in reading, writing and math. One hundred percent of our scholars are amazing!
The binders will be used to collect and showcase student work. They will help my scholars stay organized and show pride in the work that they’ve done. These binders will be passed to the following teacher to show the progress that students make from year to year. When my scholars spend days and weeks working on a writing portfolio piece or math project, it is important that it is collected with pride. When students look at the work they’ve done during the course of the year, they able to see their own growth. Binders help them do that.
