I teach the most amazing braided PreK classroom. My population consists of 3, 4, and 5 year olds. Some of my students are typical 3 or 4 year olds (VPK), some are ESE students and have a delay or impairment of some sort, and some are Headstart students meaning they are from a family that is living at or below the poverty level. I teach at a Title I elementary school where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. The blend of ages and abilities in my classroom is beautiful!
The materials I am requesting for my students will be used to help develop a love for math and build a foundation from which they will grow their knowledge about mathematics and number sense. Many of my students come to me knowing very little-especially when it comes to math. They are unable to count, understand shapes, correctly identify numbers, or make a simple pattern-all things that they will be expected to know in Kindergarten. The resources like the sensory bins with numbers, the math & science book collection, the number bots and the patterning folder games will help strengthen their math knowledge through the greatest avenue-play. These items will be uses in a variety of learning centers where the students will have a direct, hands on, learning experience.
