Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a reading specialist, and my students are kinder through second graders who are struggling to become proficient readers and writers. My students work with me individually and in groups so they can accelerate their learning and catch up to grade level. All of my students qualify for reduced-cost lunch. Most of them are learning to speak English as a second language. Some of them live in challenging home environments. But despite the obstacles in their lives, many of my students will have success in their specialized literacy program and gain lots of lost ground by the year's end.
My Project
Emerging readers LOVE chapter books. The books requested for this project are special chapter books that have been carefully leveled by experts and contain a "just right" balance of repeated and new words. Even better, this book collection tells about characters from culturally diverse backgrounds. These books will not only help my students extend their reading skills, but also introduce them to characters with whom they can really relate. The set contains 90 books (6 copies of 15 titles) and will be used in my five small groups (3-4 students in each) to accelerate both reading and writing skills.
Many of my students come from households that do not prioritize literacy, but everyday at school, they get quality time that is specifically devoted to discovering and exploring books.
Donations to this project will help enhance the literacy journey of these early readers.
