My students live in a rural town surrounded by cornfields and open space. The school district is relatively small, with only 200 students in the entire high school. I am blessed to work with some amazing students - for the most part they are all eager to learn and willing to try new things in the classroom.
I love getting students out of their seats, working with partners/groups, and trying lots of hands on projects!
My students are used to hearing me say that I am "using them as guinea pigs" - because I like to change things up each year.
My Project
Currently, my students are reading Animal Farm and Frankenstein and are in need of some small group reading books to go with the texts. We are studying utopian/dystopian societies, as well as covering themes such as knowledge, individualism, and rebellion. The students in my advanced classes will be reading Frankenstein as a whole class and the academic classes will be reading Animal Farm.
Every Tuesday and Thursday the students will be required to meet in a small group to discuss a different book they are reading outside of class.
They will be able to choose which outside book they read based on their interests. In order to make sure we have books that are relevant and interesting to my current group of students, they have requested some updated titles!
