Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, creative and curious. I teach sixth- and seventh-grade English, and one of my greatest joys is seeing my students make a bee-line for the stack of new books that just arrived, or having a student say, "Mrs. F, I love this book."
I was a journalist before I became a teacher, and I am a firm believer that students must be able to write clearly and coherently.
It is incredible how many students do not know that they must capitalize all proper nouns every single time they write them. I have students who do not consistently capitalize their own names! So we write and we write and we write. Last year one of my classes was asked to report and anchor for our school's news reports.
I try to use our computers as much as possible because they are motivating, but technology can create its own set of issues, which we overcome somehow. Does it sound as though I love teaching? I hope so, because I do. When my class walks in every day, the students' energy and optimism make me smile.
My Project
My students know that there is a lot of controversy in the air, but they don't have the context to understand it. These books will provide students with some of that context, as they learn about some of the women who lead the fights for civil rights and for women rights.
These books will teach my students that they can have a role as students in speaking up for the rights of their community and that they will, as adults, have a role in ensuring that their communities do not face limits on their voting rights, their rights as employees and their rights as leaders.
We assume that children know about the history of slavery, the civil rights movement and the fact that women did not have the right to vote. Students don't know those things. These things will help to fill that gap.
