My Students

Although some of my First Grade Inclusion Special Education and English Language Learner students struggle with learning daily, they are all inspiring, giggling children at heart.

The students know that when they are in my room they get my attention, care, and concern.

For some students, this fulfills their basic human need of acceptance. The children each have unique abilities, come from diverse cultures and some have autism, ADD, ADHD, ODD, trauma, or anger issues.

I teach in a large, diverse, K-8 high poverty school in an urban area of Philadelphia that experiences crimes. Our school receives Title I funding and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school eager to learn from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.

My Project

My students come to school with a variety of academic and emotional experiences. Some of our students may have slept in a noisy, crowded, uncomfortable space last night. Tonight those same children may not even know where they will sleep. Their situations are different from their classmates. I need to learn how to be an effective teacher and meet their emotional needs before I can expect them to be able to participate to their fullest academic potential. These courses will teach me problem solving techniques, effective communication skills, empathy, perserverence and coping strategies that I can implement in our classroom. The courses also cover how to assess, prevent and reduce bullying.

I hope to learn more about how to teach my students to manage their emotions and how to react to different life situations within our classroom and outside of school.

My hope is for the children to in turn teach their families. This may help end the circle of stress and bullying that some of my students experience. By taking the Professional Development Institute course online, I will gain Professional Development credits. I need the required textbook to be the best student I can be. I will then be able to pass down this information to my students. Help me continue my path as a lifelong learner so that I can help teach mindfulness and anti bullying to my students. They are OUR future peacemakers, nurses, teachers and scientists.

These professional development courses will give me training to understand the trauma and insecurities experienced by homeless children. I will in turn be able to service my students’ needs better by having a deeper understanding of their homeless situations. Parts of each course are specifically designed for the topic of homelessness.
