As the art teacher at A.W. Hanmer Elementary School, I am fortunate to teach every student between kindergarten and sixth grade.
My students are curious, inquisitive, brave, creative and kind.
They explore all media as they discover different artists from history through present-day, test artistic techniques, and craft the skills necessary to create an original piece of art.
While developing their personal creative process, my students are able to move freely around the classroom to access materials, collaborate with others, find inspiration, etc..
My Project
Flexible seating in a classroom is when traditional seating options are replaced with arrangements that are easily modified to fit the needs of the class.
One objective of flexible seating is to reduce the duration of sedentary periods of time when the student is essentially stuck in one position.
A second reason why flexible seating is a great option for a classroom is that it allows students to easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class. In my room, we collaborate with others often. These alternative options will also provide my students with sensory needs a place to safely move, or touch as needed. Research proves these options improve the ability to focus and persevere.
Being able to choose a different type of seat is empowering for a student and gives them a sense of ownership in their learning. They are more invested when they can make important decisions, such as choosing a seat.
