“It's not about what it is, it's about what it can become.” ― Dr. Seuss, The Lorax
My students are a group of capable, curious, and precious children.
They love to explore the world around them. They need additional materials for our Family Book Project.
I teach at an amazing elementary school located in a rural community. It houses Pre-K through fifth grade. It is a Title I school, with 80% of students receiving free or reduced-priced lunch.
My students are fabulous! They are in third, fourth, and fifth grades. My students have varying disabilities, but they are not "disabled." They are very capable individuals with a strong desire to learn. They are constantly exploring the world around them and astound me with their insight and curiosity. They are some of the kindest, sweetest individuals you would ever meet and they are so appreciative of everything they receive!
I also lead a group of 30 energetic girls in a GEMS club that focuses on STEM by encouraging girls to participate in math and science.
My Project
My students need additional books and movies to add to our collection. I received funding for a similar project through Donors Choose. The Family Book Project works by sending home a book for the family to read together. Once the family has completed the book, they return it for a project. Students work with their families to complete the project.
For example, after reading How to Eat Fried Worms, families created their own "worms" and had to write a persuasive letter to the main character to convince him not to eat them.
Once the project is completed, students receive a portable DVD player, a copy of the movie, and a bag of microwave popcorn for the weekend.
It has been met with great excitement and participation from families. I decided to scour thrift stores and yard sales to add more books and movies for the families to enjoy. The books and DVDs listed in this project will help grow our collection and fill in some missing pieces.
