Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bon jour! Salam wa Eileykum! Buenas Dias! These are just a few of the ways that you will be greeted by students in our class. Although from different countries with different backgrounds, my students come together to create a warm and supportive academic community where students learn to read, write and speak in English, all through social studies content. This happens in a collaborative environment grounded in project-based learning.
Our ninth and tenth graders are all newcomers, having just arrived from their home countries to the South Bronx, ready to learn and thrive!
My students represent the very best about what it means to be American. While many face numerous difficulties, they persevere to accomplish their goals and become pillars of the community.
My Project
History can often feel distant and disconnected from students' lives. This, combined with the fact that all of my students are English Language Learners, makes it so important for them to learn history experientially. For this project, my students will develop an online media site complete with news articles and on location broadcasts. My students need iPad mounts, shotgun microphones and a green screen setup to punch up the quality of their projects and allow them to travel to different locations and time periods.
These video recording accessories will enable my students to travel back in history to make their news broadcasts.
As English Language Learners, my students need the opportunity both to show their understanding of history and also practice speaking and presenting in English. Creating these news broadcasts will allow students to show their mastery of the history, while also strengthening their English language skills.
