My Students

The state test is over, so we're done with school work right? That's what all kids think when the big test is over. Unfortunately, there's two more months of school left and we need to keep learning.

I teach 6th grade English Language Arts to a great group of kids in Brooklyn, NY.

I have English Language Learners, Special Education, and General Education students in my three classes. After working hard all year, I like to end the year on a lighter note. We still need to read and write, but why not do it with a little fun?

My Project

Every year, after the state tests, I like to do a class book club to end the year off on a high note. We choose a book that is a little above the kids' actual reading level, break into self chosen book clubs, and read the book as it is read aloud on a CD. That way the kids get to read a hot new Young Adult book and discuss what they want to discuss about it in the groups they have chosen. This year, we want to read Cinder. It's a really cool book about a cyborg Cinderella who has to win an intergalactic battle to save herself and her world. Yes, the evil stepmother, step sisters, and the handsome prince are all there, but kicked up a thousand percent.

My kids work hard every day to become the best readers and writers they can be.

All of this should not culminate in a test that is way too hard for most of my kids to pass. Help us end the year on a high note with Cinderella to the rescue!
