Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten in a low SES community compromised of mostly Hispanic and African American populations. Despite any problems they might face at home my little humans show up to school ready to love, learn and inspire each other to be the best and kind-hearted people they can be. We might all come from different walks of life but in our classroom we build a sense of community where we are accepting and loving of each other. Our ultimate goal is to grow into the best version of ourselves we can be and go forth and share that with the world.
One of our favorite things to do is read and write.
We draw inspiration from our own lives, each other and the books they are exposed to. They beam with joy when they discover a new book to love or when their little minds make a new story to share with their peers. We are developing and fostering a love for reading and writing and by the end of the year it is so beautiful to see how much they have grown as readers and authors of their own stories.
My Project
These books depict journeys full of courage, strength, love and kindness that are being lived by people from all over the world. These stories will help my students become avid readers and writers while learning that the struggles and difficulties in life are all part of a path leading to an extraordinary life.
I like to expose my students to people and cultures beyond those you would normally see on tv and other forms of print.
The books they are exposed to helps them deal and learn about an ever changing world. Many of my students come from situations and environments similar to those of the characters in the books and thus provide a connection that they might not get in the real world.
