Our K4 - 12th grade school is located in rural south Alabama. Our students are a diverse population, many are of Native American ancestry. Many of our students come from homes that are well below the poverty line. Because of our location, many of our students do not have access to technology found in most urban areas. Because of this, our school seeks to serve this need for them.
Our students are excited about learning.
Our school has produced doctors, lawyers and others from all walks of life because of the desire to imagine and dream beyond expectations of a traditional rural community. We want to keep this tradition alive. Because of this, we need your help to fund projects that will produce students that are college and career ready.
My Project
My STEM class consists of students who are hands on learners. They are learning to build and program the robot kits we currently have in our classroom. The class size continues to grow, but the number of robot kits needs to grow in order to keep up with the enthusiasm of the class. Currently, we have large groups working on the design and programming of each robot. This limits the engagement of students. By adding more robot kits, the impact on student growth and learning will increase as they will have more opportunity to provide direct input in their groups.
My enthusiastic students are creating a desire for more students to want to get involved in Robotics and STEM activities.
As the robots they design and program are racing the middle school halls, other students are asking for opportunities to get involved.
Our class has a limited number of Chromebooks, so students must share with other classes. This limits progress at times as students have to wait for a Chromebook to be available so they can program their robot. They are excited and eager to test modifications and new designs, so new Chromebooks would be an asset to these budding engineers!
