I have a strong passion to develop students who love to read! Many students in our school come with a predisposed notion that school is boring or isn't fun, and I am on a mission to change that mindset!
Our school is in a high poverty rural area.
Our students come to school each and every day despite many challenges in their lives, challenges that you and I have not and may never experience. Research shows that children in poverty tend to have a minimal access to books and language, making my job even more crucial.
The moment my students walk through the door, they are learners, explorers, independent thinkers, members of our community, readers, scientists, and mathematicians, and they are loved, cared about, and here to flourish.
My Project
We all know that sitting at a desk all day does not lead to productivity. Most of us can remember being in school, sitting in our desks, facing forward, in a perfectly straight row. This is not what classrooms look like today. Research has shown us that children (and adults, too) need to be able to work in cooperative groups and in comfortable spaces that foster their learning.
I have taken many steps to make my classroom inviting, comfortable, and adaptable for the needs of all of the children in my classroom.
I see the need to take it an extra step. Students will now be able to work at a standing desk which will especially help the students who need to be able to move! These stools will be available to them when they are ready to sit and adjust to different heights for all kids! The lap desks will really help my students who learn best by sitting on the floor!
