Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also very ethnically diverse. Students speak a variety of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Portugese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and Arabic. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
In a classroom blessed with diversity and multiple languages, the common language we share is the love of learning and laughter.
Students in our class that are from all different cultural and economic backgrounds learn the value of teamwork, friendship, and acceptance through learning and fun.
My Project
Through this project my students will be able to have their own hard copy to use throughout this novel study. This classic written by Kate DiCamillo is sure to keep every student in our class engaged and on the edge of their seat. We will focus on many literary devices like symbolism, flashbacks vs. foreshadowing, context clues, characterization, point of view, all while giving them access to a more complex text that will also keep them engaged. Students will be able to not only enjoy what they're reading but use many of these skills to sharpen their writing skills and complete a small research project.
My goal as a teacher is to keep students excited about reading by exposing them to exciting yet challenging texts with themes that show an author's craft which demonstrate excellent story-telling and writing.
