I teach in a Title 1 school in a small, Southern town in Georgia. My students have very little experience outside of our town. They are the sweetest, most eager to learn kids I've taught during the past 24 years. However, most of them cannot afford to purchase their own books. There is nothing like being able to buy a book that interest you and you are the owner of it.
I want to be able to give every child I teach a book that may help them fall in love with reading!
I am entering a new role as an Early Intervention teacher in Reading for 3rd graders. I know from experience that it just takes that one magical book that catches a person's interest that can hook them to reading for pleasure for a lifetime.
My Project
When my project is funded, I will be able to offer books to children that interest them. These children and their families are so appreciative of the least little things given to them.
I want to promote the pleasure of reading to young readers that have struggled with literacy, by allowing them to select a book of their choice and to own it!
I have discovered as a reading specialist that when children find literature that they can connect with, they become lifelong readers!
The ultimate goal is to show children that reading is pleasurable and not another task. Owning a book is magical. All children deserve this opportunity.
