The 28 multicultural children who I spend most of my day with are extremely hard working and come to school each day to do their absolute best. Although our classroom has the bare minimum in terms of supplies and equipment, my students make the best out of so little. It makes me feel extremely privileged to be their teacher. The children have also formed a bond with each other that goes beyond the walls of the classroom. They are very helpful to each other and the first ones to finish an assignment are also the first ones to want to help their classmates.
My students are also a very "giving" group.
Although most of their families do not have funds to spare, the children recently emptied their own piggy banks to help raise money for little boys and girls with cancer.
My Project
We recently had some personal CD players purchased for us through DonorsChoose.org by an amazing donor. We now need books with CDs to give the students a selection of amazing fiction and nonfiction books to listen to and learn from. Listening to an anonymous person reading a story to them, and having their eyes follow the words, helps my second graders to learn fluency. Hearing expression and intonation teaches a child how to pace themselves and read with emotion. As the children listen to the difference between fiction and nonfiction, they will also learn how tone of voice comes into play. Listening to how others read becomes a model for my students. Giving them a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction books with CDs to listen to and read along with will help them learn new words and will give them practice with their fluency.
