Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My rising third graders are amazing young people! They bring a huge diversity of reading, writing and math assets to the classroom. Many are emergent bilinguals. They are all creative, and they have tons (I mean tons) of energy.
My students don't always have equitable access to the materials and experiences they need, compared to their peers in other schools.
We are a Title I elementary school in the Mission / Castro area that serves multiple vibrant and often-marginalized communities.
My Project
Third graders are at that age when board games start to be really fun. Even if - and sometimes especially when - kids are accidentally learning while they play!
The brain hard-wires kids to learn through play.
These items may look like classroom "extras," but they will actually be some of the most effective tools in the room. They will provide a fun way for my students to practice hard-to-master skills of third grade: paragraph writing, elapsed time, and advanced place value.
In addition, I have added a selection of "first grade level" books for my classroom library, so that students (especially emergent bilingual students) who are still working on foundational level reading skills don't have to feel like second-class readers when it comes time to pick books from the library.
