I haven't met my students yet because I'm starting at a new grade in a new school in a new district this fall. Third graders this fall will have unique challenges due to schools moving to distance learning for the 4th term of the 2019-2020 school year. I want to help my students fill the gaps they might be missing from last year as well as prepare them for their next year of school.
Math learning for third graders begins by using concrete objects they can feel and manipulate. This helps them gain a deeper understanding of math content. I love math and want to share that love with my students. Giving them hands on manipulatives will help them understand and love math more. In addition, because their second grade year will have ended with distance learning for the 4th term, they may have additional holes in their math understanding and using hands on manipulatives will help them fill those holes and understand math better.
