Help me give my students cat themed crafts and snacks for the last day of school, as we have our third annual kitty cat party. Students can decorate cat masks, screen print, decoupage, and many other activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is an art specialty school. There is a fair amount of diversity in the school, despite the extreme level of segregation in the city. The majority of the students are African American Students; but there is also a mix of Caucasian, Asian, American Indian, and Latino students. We have had an influx of refugees from countries in Africa and Asia recently. There is a large percentage of students who identify as LGBTQ, and a strong Gay Straight Alliance in the building as well.
Students support one another in their artistic endeavors.
Overall, there is a fair amount of camaraderie in the building and a strong sense of community.
My Project
Students will enjoy the third annual kitty kat day in all of my classes. On the last day of school in may, they will make cat themed jewelry, color cat coloring book pages, sew cat toys or cat finger puppets, decorate cat shaped masks, paint each other's face with a cat theme, and last but not least, bake and decorate cat shaped cookies.
The purpose of this is to create a sense of community and fun among these students.
Many of these kids come from high poverty backgrounds and difficult situations and school is their family. This is something they will look back at and remember. They are engaging in the joy of making something without a grade attached, and without the stress/competition involved with their daily art classes. This is about collaboration, camaraderie and fun. This is a chance to relax and for the teacher and students to get to know each other as individuals, which helps to build relationships in the classroom. Having a good rapport with students makes them feel valued and increases attendance and academic success.
