My students need LEGOs, blocks, straws, toothpicks, dominoes, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, Play-Doh and other supplies for our STEM boxes in order to promote critical thinking and teamwork.
A parent to help with homework, a warm meal on the table and clean clothes to wear to school are things that many of my students only dream of. Over 50% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch, but these barriers don't stop them from loving school and doing their best.
No matter what baggage students walk through my door with, they find a place where everyone matters, everyone has value and everyone has something to offer.
Our classroom is built on respect and a love of learning.
My students see school as a safe place; a place where they know they are loved and cared for. My students are eager to learn, want to do well and are highly motivated by a good read aloud, technology and each other.
My Project
These LEGOs, blocks, straws, toothpicks, dominoes, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, Play-Doh and other materials will help create STEM boxes for students to explore and build with. Students will be given a box with a set of supplies inside and a task or challenge to build. Students will build bridges, homes, mazes, and other creations only using the materials in their boxes! The boxes will provide new opportunities for my students to be creative, enhance their learning, problem-solve and build social skills.
The US Bureau of Statistics says that in the next 20 years, 80% of jobs will require technical skills.
Students crave activities in which they can use hands-on materials to learn. What better way to do that than to ask them to solve real-world problems with concrete materials? These boxes will promote critical thinking skills as students find creative ways to approach these problems. They will also be integrated into science, math, social studies, and literacy. With your help, my students will be able to reach their goals and become life-long problem solvers!
