This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We are ready for reading! I teach Pre-K at a charter school in an urban environment. We serve predominantly low-income students and families.
Even though my students range from ages three to five, many of them are ready to read. In fact, some are already reading. However, our phonics and sight word instruction is limited to flash card drills, which aren't engaging all the students. We need a more interesting, Pre-K friendly way to learn our sounds and sight words.
We are in need of four literacy games and puzzles aimed at reinforcing "sound it out" skills and teaching sight words. This will give the boost they need to succeed in kindergarten, which is more academic than years past. Many of my students do not come from homes rich with books and high vocabulary. Therefore, they are at risk for not succeeding in school. The more literacy instruction we can give them in Pre-K, the better they will be.
You will make it possible for my students who are struggling the most and not responding to drills to become early readers. Your gift will inspire and foster a love of literacy in my students, as games and puzzles teach phonics in a fun way.
