Distance learning has been a challenge for our students - even though they are generally digitally literate and may have shared technology at home students have stuggled with feeling lonely and needing assistance with learning. Many students share technology tools with siblings and have parents who are still required to work during the day, which means they don't have adult support for learning until in the evening.
Most of all, my students miss the interaction of the school day.
Time and again they have shared feelings of being lonely. They need to be reassured that their teachers are still thinking of them and want the best for them.
My Project
Middle school students are struggling with social distancing - while they may know how to use digital tools for learning, they are missing the social component of school and the chance to interact with their teachers and peers daily.
Over the past month I have had many students reach out to me expressing loneliness or fear about being away from school.
These items will allow me to send each of my students a personalized note with a small gift to remind them that their science teacher is still thinking of them and wishing them well. A small positive message will go a long way toward building strong connections and helping students finish the school year on a positive note, even from a distance. Each student will receive a positive card, a bookmark, and a Lego minifigure to keep as a reminder through the summer.
