Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from mostly low-income families. Our school is an ethnically diverse school and is located on the south side of Chicago. Many of our students speak both English and Spanish. Also, I work with an amazing staff that brings so much passion and energy to our school community.
My students are all very hard working, creative, and insightful.
All of them receive reading and math instruction in a special education classroom. Some of them receive speech and social work services as well. I am very lucky to work with such a wonderful group of students and teachers! They love to learn, laugh and explore! They continue to amaze me every day!
My Project
We would really enjoy having this "Tinkering Toolbox" as one of our personalized learning stations. All of my students love to create using a variety of materials. Children's confidence improves when they can make objects independently.
Students work so many of their senses when they use manipulatives, engaging in "all-senses work" improves thinking, problem solving, retention of knowledge, academic improvements and social skill development!
My students ask daily are we going to have building time today? Are we going to make something today? When we have math time, can we use the manipulatives (especially the legos)? It is truly remarkable to see the learning that happens during these parts of the school day!
