Think Safety - It Couldn’t Hurt

Help me give my students knee and elbow pads for one-of-a-kind after school outreach program: a skateboard club.

My Project

Trending from the popularity of the summer Olympics and the summer X-Games, we are starting a brand new middle school skateboard club as one of our after-school outreach programs.

My hope is to create an avenue, an after-school skateboarding club, that helps serve our population in an alternative way.

Similar to other clubs such as drama club, art club, and chess club, the skateboard club will provide a “home” for our students, as well as provide other opportunities such as tutoring, mentorship, leadership, and community service.

Unfortunately, many of our families do not have the additional disposable income to donate or help fundraise for our after-school skateboard club. Purchasing items such as basic safety equipment such as knee and elbow pads are extremely difficult and could prevent many of our vulnerable middle school students from actively participating in our outreach program.

The skateboard club will provide constructive activities, a supervised safe space for our students, identity exploration, and after-school peer-to-peer and mentor relationships.

Studies prove that clubs with these “relationships” drastically reduce the likelihood of students using drugs or alcohol and reduce teen pregnancies. Students that do participate in the clubs perform better academically, gain leadership skills, and have more self-confidence than students who do not participate in an after-school club or organization.

Many of my middle school students are already at a disadvantage when it comes to equality. But when it comes to equity with outreach programs, they fall farther behind. Please help our new outreach after-school program.
