My students are collaborators, communicators and critical thinkers. We have a very diverse group of learners, with a third of the students from low-income households. I teach all students in grades K-6, as a 21st Century Literacy teacher. My students see me once a week for 40 minutes and engage in lessons that involve creating, problem solving and working together. At an age where technology over takes their social emotional experiences, my students have the opportunities to be social and engage face to face. Students don't learn the skills online to face controversy or feel empathy. While in my class, we work on these skills that are lacking in our young learners today. In my classroom, the students will use their critical thinking skills to help prepare them for the future and their post-secondary careers. I love my students because they are thirsting for the hands on experiences and want to log off from devices.
My Project
In Breakout EDU, participants work together to find and solve clues around the room to open each of the locks. The locks will ultimately open a locked box, similar to an escape room. As soon as students see the locked box, they are immediately driven by the challenge to get it open.
I can use Breakout kits in every subject area and grade level.
Students can find games on geometric shapes, literature, physical education, computer science, the library, and even team development. I can even spend some time to create my own; team up with other teachers to create a multidisciplinary experience. No matter how the game is created, Breakout provides opportunities to keep students focused on building the critical-thinking and social and emotional skills necessary to solve these complex problems.
21st Century skills are in high demand by employers and are more valuable than any knowledge. Breakout EDU is an excellent tool for participants to practice 21st century skills including collaboration, communication, critical thinking and problem solving.
With 2 Breakout EDU kits, I can run consecutive small groups at once. I can also set up boxes to share with other teachers in my building to spread the experience building wide.
