My 2nd graders are the best! Each day they walk in with a smile on their face, eager to learn, compassion in their hearts, and determination on their mind. They are ready to conquer any and everything I challenge them with.
I teach in an integrated classroom of 23 students, 6 of those students are on IEPs for academic or social skills needs.
We provide support and services for them within the classroom, instead of a pull-out model. This type of classroom is beneficial for all students. For my special education students this model eliminates transitions and disruptions within their day. This model fosters a respectful, caring classroom community that all learners can thrive in.
My Project
I'm looking to bring a variety of STEM toys into my classroom. STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, allows students to think creatively, investigate, collaborate, and problem solve. STEM is growing in popularity with all students, as it allows students to explore the ways in which pieces and various parts of things work together. STEM lays the foundation for students to become critical thinkers, scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
The STEM toys I chose will help facilitate the critical thinking skills we hope all students possess as the grow as individuals and life-long learners.
Students will be able to participate in STEM activities once a week with these materials. I envision creating STEM stations so that students can work in small groups or individually. Each station will have a task to complete that will engage, challenge and promote deeper learning.
