I teach at a Title I school, in a very diverse neighborhood, and my students face many challenges inside and outside of the classroom every day. When they come into my room, I want to foster an environment where they feel safe and are excited and eager to learn, and where I can change their attitudes about school. I foster love, collaboration, community, kindness, and the ability to take chances in my classroom, and my students know this on the very first day.
My fifth graders come prepared, ready to learn, and with smiles on their faces, even when times are hard at home.
They deserve the best from me every day, and I love to encourage my students and show them how important learning is and that they can do anything they set their mind to. If they take advantage of opportunities, work hard, and collaborate, they will succeed. No matter what their background is, I foster a love of learning, and I believe that every single one of them has a bright future ahead doing something they love.
My Project
My students come to school every day at 8:00 am and trickle into my classroom to start the day. I want them to be able to wake up and get ready for learning by doing some STEM-related games in the mornings for 15-20 minutes. This "soft start" to our day will allow my students to not have any anxiety or stress coming into my room, it will allow them to have choices on what they do, collaborate with each other, and do a hands-on engaging activity that gets them ready to learn for the rest of the day.
Hands-on STEM type games and activities will allow my students to collaborate with each other, be creative, think outside of the box, and develop relationships within my classroom.
This "soft start" to our day will set the mood and expectations for the rest of the day and give us a great start so we can really dive into our learning! This project will allow my students to have access to some high-level thinking games, collaboration games, and independent games that they can do quietly while they wake up their brains.
