Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The quote "All the sounds of the earth are music" sums up our program perfectly because not every sound a beginning string player makes is going to be beautiful. But with a patient and encouraging teacher students will soon enough be able to play with confidence.
Our students come from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
They attend four different elementary schools on the south side of the Des Plaines District 62. These south side buildings are made up of a large latino population, followed by various students of a variety of ethnic backgrounds. These students wait until 5th grade to join the instrumental program and come ready and willing to learn regardless of how old their instrument is or what condition it might be in. Parents and families are a great support to these students, which helps them achieve what might not normally be expected in their situation.
My Project
With the requested string accessories, students will be able to learn how to play their instrument with proper playing technique. Many students come to lessons and rehearsals without all the necessary accessories such as rosin, shoulder rests and rock stops. Rosin is a chalk-like substance that is rubbed on the bow of the instrument to help the bow-hair grip the strings of the instrument. Without rosin, young performers have a difficult time producing sound. Shoulder rests (used for violins and violas) and rock stops (used for cellos and bass) help foster proper playing posture and create good playing habits for young students. Finally, a tuner/metronome allows me to not only to tune students' instruments, but also acts as a rhythmic tool to keep students on beat and helps them learn to play together.
Playing a string instrument enhances a child's quality of life.
It provides creative, emotional, and social opportunities and can lead to improvements in academic performance in other areas beyond music. By supporting this project, you are making it possible for students to learn a new skill as well as become well rounded members of society.
