When students see concepts in 3-D how much more meaningful will it become? How much more will they learn by creating a model in 3-D of what they are studying? The MakerBot 3D printer will bring learning as close to real life as can be without it being the real thing, or is it the real thing?
I have a self-contained special education classroom of 13 students that are eager to learn in their own way.
Many of my students are autistic and have difficulty focusing and learning using traditional teaching methods. Using hands on learning activities is necessary most of the time to allow students to gain a firm grasp on a concept. The school is a high poverty school with over 75% of the students receiving free and reduced lunches. The school is a 4th through 6th grade school and the students have limited opportunities to explore many things outside our town or advanced technology.
My Project
I have been exposing my students to a variety of career opportunities and what better way to introduce them to engineering than to give them the opportunity to design and create an object with this revolutionary MakerBot 3D printer. They will be so excited and creative minds will start to design and create solutions to answer questions these wonderful students have. Students can work together and much learning will take place. When they have to design a model of what they have just studied they will have to make sure they have a firm understanding of the concept. What can they do to make it better? Hands on learning means so much more and stays with someone much longer.
My students will be able to learn important technological advancements while having fun.
