"She was mean to me on the playground." I have heard this several times from one of my students. With my students having special needs, they are often the victims of bullying. I want to teach my students about bullying and that it is not their fault they get bullied.
I work with special education students.
The students I work with have the most severe disabilities, including developmental cognitive disability, autism, FAS, deaf/blind and ataxia telangiectasia. We are in a public school setting, with my students in the general education setting as much as possible. Being in a poverty zone, there is not a lot of funding for supplies. As often is true with special education students, they need many more supplies and multiple ways to be taught, in order to achieve success. This is a challenge when there are not the needed supplies to teach the students.
My Project
Many of the students I work with have disabilities that are noticeable to the general education students. This unfortunately opens up opportunities for bullies to take advantage of. On numerous occasions, I have had one of my students report to me that someone said something mean to them. Through the use of the Bullying in School book and the accompanying story books on bullying, I can teach my students about bullying and how to handle it. Too often special education students are the victims of bullying. Through the use of the computer they can then create their own stories about bullying and ways to handle it. By teaching about bullying, this will help my students' school life and their lives outside of school be safer and more enjoyable.
Bullying effects students every single day.
Special education students often are the victims of bullying, due to their differences. The books I am requesting in this project, including Bullying In Schools, will help me to teach my students about bullying and how to handle it. The computer will allow my students to create their own stories on bullying and be able to reread their stories any time they want.
