This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with students who have been mostly written off by the adults around them, so they don't have the best opportunities for exploring the world outside of their small town. As an opportunity [alternative] school teacher, I see all that they can be and do because with the few resources we have, they get excited and jump at the chance to do something different and to be apart of something new and exciting.
I have musicians, artists, decorators, student leaders, planners, motivators and many others that I teach daily.
So many of them desire to make music, draw masterpieces, plan extravagant events, dabble in writing or filming, or plan out major events for their peers to have fun; they all do well, but they notice what could be due to what is lacking. I know with help and a little more than what we have right now, they can really leave our school with the tools, plans, knowledge and experience to go further.
My Project
With so many new and emerging authors, this is going to really show students that there are people in other parts of the country and the world that are just like them. For so long, these students have been forced to find something interesting to read, but much of it has not reflected or mirrored their own lives. Getting these new books will offer them a chance to get back the enjoyment they had in reading.
These books, especially Matt de la Pena's, who I was fortunate enough to meet, will prove it to them.
No matter how they're leaving or how life started for them, they have a chance for better and greater.
