Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing and diverse group from Oakland, CA. While they come from a wide range of backgrounds, they are united in their dedication to achievement. Families and friends from El Salvador, China, Guatemala, Mexico, Tonga, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Yemen come together to support our vibrant community.
This is the most motivated, and highest performing group of students I've taught to date, but there are challenges.
With over 90% of our school qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, resources are tight. My students don't necessarily have books or internet access at home.
My Project
I've seen a single copy of Harry Potter pass from one student to another to another. I've had a dozen students write responses and reflections on the same book by Judy Bloom or Jerry Spinelli. At some point the books just give out. Pages begin falling out. Covers get lost. With your help we will be able to recharge and restart our classroom library. Restock the shelves with some old favorites and new classics. We will be able to take these new books and introduce a whole new school year to wonderful, high quality adventures with reading.
Your donation will have a direct impact on the students in this class, this year, and will continue to enrich the lives of students as long as the glue keeps the books together.
And, in the far future, when the new books finally give up the ghost, they will get sent home to live with their most loving reader. Thank you.
