My 8th graders are at the point in their development where they are just starting to not believe everything they hear from adults, where they start to question what the heard when the were younger. It is these facets of their personalities that make them sponges for learning about different time periods and different people.
When they take the information they have learned, pause, and then start to piece together their own ideas and opinions on a topic you can SEE their ideas forming.
Through exciting texts and honest discussions they start to analyze and question and collaborate based on what they learned not just based on who their best friend is. It is this journey that truly helps them to begin cultivating their perspectives and skills to be an informed citizen who feels confident in contributing to the diverse community they are growing up in.
My Project
When my first copies of "Stamped" arrived in my classroom during the first days of school my new students were intrigued and asking questions. When we used them for the first time in class they were engaged and asking questions. The story they had heard many times in their childhood about how the United States began was being told from a new perspective and they wanted to know more.
Since that lesson as we continue to dive deeper in American history they are asking to hear more sides of the story.
This book provides historical content through the lens of people who were so critical in the development of the United States but often left out of so many history books.
