Ms. O'Dell from Los Angeles CA is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need to achieve National Board Certification so I can be the best teacher I can be. There are four components. This component focuses on differentiated instruction through student writing.
My students are a resilient, responsible, hardworking, fun loving, curious group. I say resilient because so many of them have experienced life events that others can only relate to as a plot line on a favorite television show.
I see signs of hunger and trauma.
Parents hold multiple jobs and there are nine-year-olds who are responsible for watching younger siblings and washing clothes at the laundromat. They do not complain.
They understand the importance of their education. They know that much has been sacrificed for them.
Education is incredibly important for the population of students that I serve. They have many obstacles to overcome. The more that I can help them learn the skills and habits that they need to succeed, the better their chances will be of staying in school. They do not have the advantages of family connections to navigate the educational system. They don't have access to private tutors or college readiness coaches. They are not preparing for PSATs and internships. Many are learning to communicate academically in a language that is not spoken at home.
Students need teachers who can engage them and make content relevant.
I've taken many classes and attended numerous workshops after hours. I've studied geology, astronomy, oceanography, history, government, and math. I've learned block coding and attended numerous workshops to create hands-on lessons to excite students. Now I want to take my teaching to a higher level by holding myself accountable to the rigorous standards and process of National Board Certification.
Holding myself to the highest standard of teaching will benefit my students this year and in years to come. I want each and every one of my students to graduate from high school and attend college. I want them to believe in themselves and know that college is a realistic goal. I know that I have to work just as hard as they do.
