My students are awesome, resilient, and inquisitive sixth graders with big appetites for knowledge. In fact, they are my big historians who will spend this year on a 13.8 billion year journey through the history of the universe. While my students come to me every day with a thirst for a knowledge and understanding of the world around them, they also come to me from all different places.
While I wish all of my students had a chance to experience everything life has to offer first-hand, the reality is that many of them come without some of the basic necessities.
While we can help get them the basics they need here at school, we can't always provide those first-hand experiences that other families have provided their children. That is why we are trying to bridge this gap in experiences with this project.
Sometimes just talking about a subject is not enough for students to actually learn and empathize about specific events of the past. This project will help to bring the events of Japanese Internment alive for students through George Takei's graphic novel, They Called Us Enemy.
Moreover, this graphic novel will also act as a jumping off point for discussing whether or not we, as a society, have truly learned from the past, or are we actually witnessing history repeating itself with the immigration detention centers and what is currently happening at America's borders.
Our students need to understand that the past and the present are not two separate entities, but have a fluid connection to each other and we must be cognisant of how the actions of the past have a direct impact on the events of today.
