As new kindergarteners, my students are very excited about the year ahead. They are eager to learn, and as a new teacher I hope to help them reach their maximum potential. However, the reading material that greeted me in my classroom was lacking, and what little I did find was very outdated.
We are in a very high-poverty school with a very diverse population.
In my own class we have 5 nationalities and races represented. My students come from various backgrounds, but many do not have the resources at home that they need for a successful school career. Many of my students and my students' parents do not speak English, so it is even more important for these students that they can be fully emersed in the English language.
Since my students are new to school, they are intrigued by every little detail of our day, and are eager to learn anything that is presented. They are extremely enthusiastic and I hope to gain their interest in the curriculum through new read-aloud material.
My Project
I want these students to be exposed at school to aspects of our ever-changing world that they are not getting at home, and with new read-aloud material for our classroom, I can begin doing that. As a new teacher, I have spent much of my own money on classroom materials, and I simply don't have the funds to buy everything I need to satisfy the curiosity of their young minds.
These books will teach my students curriculum-based information that they will use throughout the rest of their lives.
With this information, they will learn and grow into the adults we ourselves have become. Let's give them that chance!
