A welcome mat, house plants, curtains, reading pillows, I have worked hard and searched many yard sales to create a warm and welcoming environment in my "Reading Room" for the struggling readers and writers that walk through my door every day. I know their names, their interests, and their daily battle with literacy. I believe in them and know they can succeed armed with a positive attitude, a little patience, and the right tools.
I am the Reading and Writing Specialist at a large middle school in the fourth most populous community in the state of New Hampshire.
My students come from all walks of life, with varying abilities, disabilities, cultures, income, and interests. This year, they have taught me words in Swahili, Arabic, Spanish, and German. In return, I would like to help them break the code of the English language, equip them with tools for success, and instill in them a love of literacy and learning.
My Project
The digital world has opened readers up to new realms of digital reading materials. Not only do we have physical books and magazines to read, but now we have a digital world full of ebooks, blogs, online magazines, informational websites, and other digitally published reading materials. The possibilities are endless! These tablets will allow my low readers to practice digital literacy skills. They will be able to read stories with quick access to dictionaries, image searches for visuals, and web access for further research on topics they come across and become curious about. There are so many free reading resources out that that we will be able to tap with these tablets.
Giving students digital reading materials is meeting this tech-savvy generation right where they are!
Using digital reading materials is an excellent way to engage reluctant readers and draw them into the reading process in a way that is comfortable to them. Students love the novelty of using a device in the classroom. Our physical classroom library is limited to the space we have. These tablets will be able to open students up to the endless texts, topics, and resources available to them online.
