I have several classes of energetic, curious, and adventurous middle school students. They are always looking for something new and big to do and learn. Many of them come from difficult backgrounds with less than normal living experiences. For many, coming to school is a way of escaping their everyday world. They feel safe in my classroom, they trust me, and they know that I deeply care for them.
My students have a new appreciation toward learning music, and they are always looking for the next big opportunity!
Once we learn a skill or concept, we build on it and add the next challenge. A majority of my students are not exposed to a wide variety of music. Many would start the school year saying, “I don’t like music” or “I’m not good at this.” Those same kids leave my room at the end of the year and continue with music by either joining an ensemble for the next school year, taking private lessons, or playing an instrument at home.
My Project
It has been a very exciting time for us with music at our school! Starting in February of 2020, we are adding seventy-five new members to our steel drum program! This is an historical step at our school, and I’m so excited to see where it will go! As we have slowly but surely acquired essential instruments for our steel drum ensembles, we are still in need of a few percussion stands for some of our instruments.
Strong quality stands make a difference in the sound and protection of any percussion instrument.
We need a concert snare drum stand to hold our “break drum”, which is characteristic in traditional steel drum ensembles, a bongo drum stand for seated players, and a tom stand for our drum set. These are the next items needed for our growing program.
Around this time last year, we had zero working stands. Through the generosity of Donors Choose, we have gradually built up our inventory. It is so heartening to see how much my students appreciate the gifts we have received. We truly appreciate your support. Thank you!
