Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
Our team is preparing for the upcoming softball season. One of the things that killed us last year was batting. My girls have good eyes but, man, their bat speed are slow, often grounding to the shortstop. Having the Rukket bucket of heavy training balls, along with the other weighted training balls, will help increase bat speed. These balls will not move unless they are hit right, and hit hard; they give the batter immediate feedback as to how they hit the ball. The only way to hit a ball hard is to increase bat speed. After hitting with the weighted balls you will naturally have a quicker bat speed and will be able to hit regular softballs harder and further.
We will be batting indoors into nets in our training facility, aka the auditorium.
By using weighted balls we know that they wont bounce around and break anything, which is ideal for batting in our training facility aka auditorium. We will also need a Louisville Slugger softball bat to use during our batting practices and during games. One of our bats reached the end of the tunnel last season and now we are looking to replenish our armory. Louisville has been a reliable bat line and has done us good for two years, we would love to have another one in our family. We also need a few buckets to place the weighted balls into.
