My classroom is one of eight classrooms in a Head Start Center. Our children age from 3-5, they come from different cultures, areas, and many are from low income families.
Our children are greeted everyday with a smile and a hug, which sometimes can make a huge impact on their day.
We teach the children we are their "school family" and we stick together. Being in our classroom environment teaches the children how to be kind, share, take turns, show empathy, all while learning the basics they need to know in order to be successful when they go on to Kindergarten.
"A teacher's work lasts a lifetime."
My Project
The comfy chairs will be inviting to the children, making them feel welcome to sit in the library and enjoy books. Having a listening center in our classroom will allow for a lot of learning. The listening center will focus on their listening skills by following along with a book. When listening to a book and following along, it allows the children to learn new words and be able to point them out while following along. A child might even enjoy a genre of a book they might not otherwise pick out for themselves. Children can also be introduced to books above their reading level.
Using a flannel board will allow for children's imagination and creativity to flourish.
Flannel boards take books to a whole new level. If you allow the children to help you with a flannel board story, it helps with fine motor skills. Reading a story using a flannel board can also help the children with memorization, so when you read the book again the children can read it along with you.
We have seen how choice can positively affect our students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
